Thereโ€™s something about the Spring air over the Easter weekend that forever puts me in my nostalgic feels. Whilst I was going to be cliche - or rather - classique and post the famous Gummo shot that circulates socials every Easter, I decided against it and to throw an ode to the original OG of the bunny outfit, Zelda Wynn Valdes.

Valdes, a trailblazing Black fashion designer, created designs that exuded sophistication and allure long before it became mainstream. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, her client list included some of the most elite figures of her time, showcasing her ability to enhance a womanโ€™s femininity with every custom-fitted creation.

But it was in the 1960s that Valdes cemented her place in fashion history with her collaboration with Hugh Hefner. When tasked with designing the inaugural Playboy Bunny costume for the legendary Playboy Club in 1960, Valdes didn't just deliver โ€“ she created an icon. Drawing inspiration from haute couture and burlesque, her design embodied the essence of luxury and sophistication that Playboy was known for.

Valdes's influence extended far beyond the Playboy Club, as she seamlessly transitioned between fashion and costume design. From classical singer Marian Andersonโ€™s concert recitals to actress Constance Bennettโ€™s presentation to Queen Elizabeth in 1951, Valdes's designs left an indelible mark on every stage they graced.

Despite her many accomplishments, Valdes remained humble and dedicated to her craft until her passing in 2001. In fact, at the age of 65 in 1970, she showed no signs of slowing down, as she continued to work with the Dance Theatre of Harlem, designing costumes for over 80 productions. Her legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding us of the power of creativity and the pursuit of beauty in all its forms. As we celebrate Easter and the icons of yesteryear, let's raise a glass to Zelda Wynn Valdes and her timeless contributions to fashion.
